Experiencing discrimination or harassment at work?
Workplace discrimination and harassment are unlawful under the Equality Act 2010. If you're being treated differently because of a protected characteristic, you may have options.
What this usually looks like
Treated differently to colleagues
You're being managed more harshly, overlooked for opportunities, or excluded - and you believe it's connected to who you are.
Unwanted behaviour or comments
You're experiencing unwelcome conduct related to a protected characteristic - comments, jokes, intimidation, or exclusion.
Denied a promotion or opportunity
You were qualified but passed over, and you suspect the decision was influenced by your age, gender, race, disability, or another protected characteristic.
Retaliation after raising concerns
You raised a discrimination complaint and things got worse - victimisation is itself unlawful under the Equality Act.
Key things to understand
Protection covers specific characteristics
The Equality Act 2010 protects against discrimination based on age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage, pregnancy, race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation.
It doesn't have to be intentional
Discrimination can be indirect - a policy that applies to everyone but disproportionately disadvantages people with a protected characteristic.
Harassment has a specific legal meaning
Unwanted conduct related to a protected characteristic that violates your dignity or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.
Complaining is protected
If you raise a discrimination complaint, treating you badly because of it is itself unlawful. This is called victimisation.
